Wifi

Standing at the window waiting for my daughter to rise.

No wifi. Rain pelts against the windowpanes of our little cabin. My daughter is still in bed. Best place to be. We will not build a fire this morning. Maybe this evening. Forecasters predict tomorrow as sunny. We will see. In the interim, time passes slowly, peacefully.

The lack of wifi poses only one problem. I miss connecting with my husband, in the evening, just before supper. We tried phoning last night; he cannot hear anyone on his new phone. Will have to rectify that somehow. Maybe we should not have switched to a cell phone instead of the landline. Still, when we are both away from home…

So why am I without wifi? Mother/daughter getaways figured on our calendar at regular intervals before Covid. Once per year. We decided to reinstate the practice. As a result, we find ourselves tucked away from the madding crowd and endless responsibilities. Heaven. Or at least a piece of heaven.

Too late to book a comfort cabin at our favourite provincial park, I searched wifi for something close, yet not too close to home. Not for everyone, Whispering Winds cabin suits us very well. With all the comforts of home, we packed lighter. The picnic table and the fire pit superbly accommodate our need to rough it.

Without wifi, I get to sit, write, dream a little. How did life get so busy? Both my daughter and I needed a rest. A time to break with schedules, expectations and just be. I see bare feet peeking over the balcony. Time for breakfast.
