Transitions

Chez Sonia

Things happen. Often unpredictable and unforeseen, change catalyzes what we consider as normal into something else. Life acts like the weather it seems. However, change only heralds the beginning. Transition constitutes all our decisions about how to handle the unknown that follows.

Debbie Doornbos and Margaret Clark cohosted an informative retreat recently “Befriending the Unknown”. Most human beings like things to be predictable. As a number one on the Enneagram, control lives as my priority, or it did. Since I have enjoyed a few years and have had the opportunity to practise letting go, I now recognise how little actually remains in my control. In the retreat we learned that although we cannot do much about change, we have a say in how we approach transition.

As mentioned in my previous blog, aging snuck up on me unawares. Initial shock has finally diminished. The grieving process has passed the anger stage and I am beginning to function beyond rote again. An essential ingredient in transition, patience allows me to mourn. Within grieving, time floats. As individuals, each has his or her own timeline. Permission to be while healing unhurried, hastens the process. A paradox.

Gratitude extends to family and friends who gave me space to be. Enriching retreats helped me prioritise my next steps. My studio again takes centre stage as I prepare canvases and initial proposals for a new series. I have regained my sense of humour. As “Transitions” develops, I move through my own transition to a quieter, more manageable pace. Life is good.
